If you own a home with plenty of extra space, you might be tempted to do a number of different things with your extra room. While you could set up an Airbnb, you might also want to utilize the space as a hobby room. Many hobbies create clutter in our living areas, so why not confine it to one area? If this sounds like a good idea to you, here are the steps I would take to create my own hobby room.
Step 1: Determine Your Hobby
For many, the idea of a hobby room is great. However, many of us may think we have a hobby worthy of an entire room, when our main hobby is really watching Netflix after a long day of work. If you fall into this category, your first step is to determine which hobby to pursue. It could be painting, playing music, or gaming. You could even create a great reading room. Or, if it comes down to this, you could simply create a comfortable space to continue binging your favorite shows.
Step 2: Gather Your Supplies
Once you’ve decided which hobby to pursue, you will need to either buy or gather your supplies. Make sure you have everything you need; it is easy to forget something in a long-forgotten box in the attic and procrastinate on your hobby because of it. The best way to avoid this is to make a checklist and take a Saturday to round everything up.
Step 3: Set-Up
After you have all of your supplies together, it is time to set up your room. This will vary depending on your hobby, but I suggest going about set-up in a similar way, no matter what you decide to do. First, make sure there is nothing in the room that will get in your way. Second, move in any large furniture, such as desks, storage, chairs, etc. Then, put away all of your supplies in the right spot. You want to make sure you put everything away now, so that your area is clean and ready for you. Finally, double-check that there isn’t anything missing and decorate!
Step 4: Upkeep
Of course, if you have a hobby room, you will have to maintain it. Keep it in good condition by cleaning up after every session and vacuuming/dusting regularly. This room is your zone to be yourself, so allow yourself the luxury of relaxing and not worrying about how messy the room is or how much you have to clean up. Just do it and you will feel much better.
Setting up a hobby room is easy and takes minimal effort, which means it is a great idea or an extra room. However, if you decide that a hobby room is not right for you, stay tuned for my next blog for another idea on how you can utilize your extra space.
