Houses are the one asset nearly everyone wants to own at one time or another. However, some people take homeownership to the extreme, creating envy-worthy playgrounds for the rich and famous. If, like me, you enjoy looking at these extravagant homes, continue reading as I dive into some of the most expensive properties in the world.

Bruce Makowsky’s Billionaire Paradise

In January, Forbes wrote a piece on a Bel Air mansion, costing $250 million. Bruce Makowsky created this mansion not to live in, but to sell to a “homebody” so they can have all they could ever want, right at home. Here are some of the highlights of this gorgeous estate:

  • The most lavish family night room in existence. A 4-lane bowling alley, complete with gold pins, complements the glass foosball and ping-pong tables. On top of that, there is $200,000 worth of candy in glass containers lining the walls.
  • Alcohol for any occasion, including two wine cellars stocked full, as well as a swim-up bar, which stands beside an 85-foot pool.
  • Seven full-time staff. There is no way any single person can clean the 38,000-square-foot mansion.

Lakshmi Mittal’s “Taj Mittal”

One of London’s most expensive properties is pseudo-jokingly referred to as the Taj Mittal. This $135 million home was given this name due to its renovations. The marble used came from the same quarry as the actual Taj Mahal. Although photos and specific details of the interior are closely guarded, it has been confirmed that the property contains 12 bedrooms, Turkish baths, an indoor swimming pool, a picture gallery, and a ballroom. Not only does this property reside in London, it also rests on “Billionaire’s Row”, which means it is surrounded by equally gorgeous properties.

Antilia, the $1 Billion Home

Imagine a $1 billion skyscraper. While this might sound like a gigantic office building, it is actually the home to Mukesh Ambani and his family. This house (if you can call it that) stands 27 stories tall against the Mumbai skyline. To put this insane mansion into perspective, it requires 600 staff to manage and includes six floors for parking, four floors for hanging gardens, three rooftop helipads, and much more. One of the most interesting aspects of Antilia is the comparison between the mansion and its surroundings. There was national controversy in India, because the home was considered overly-extravagant, since most residents in the area live in slums. Perhaps due to the outrage, or possibly for other reasons, as of May 2016 the Ambani clan had yet to move into the skyscraper.

Although most people will never be able to live in such incredible homes, it is still interesting to see how people live when their worth is over $1 billion. Glimpsing how the 1% of the 1% goes about their day gives us something to strive toward. While you may be comfortable in your home, it is still intriguing to imagine what life would be like in any one of these three mansions.
